Apologies, second Test is at Old Trafford it seems.

First real test for McCullum after his honeymoon period ends with a bump.
All this talk of giving players an extra chance comes to a head when you lose and there are times when you are doing a player a favour by taking them (CRAWLEY esp) out of the firing line.
Lees is probably heading that way too as the pair of them average around 25.

Let's be fair - even McCullum hates all this cringe Bazball nonsense and he was honest enough after the wins to admit that they were more to do with individual brilliance than anything else.
Needs a lot of time to turn this team into anything decent on a consistent basis

Must say I was impressed by SA's attack with their extra pace.
Rabada is top class, Jansen looks a very promising left arm alternative & like the aggression of Nortje. Ngidi a good support too.

I know players are used to flipping between formats but when Crawley is obviously dropped for the second Test at Edgbaston next Thursday the possible replacements have either been playing 50 over cricket (Jennings), the 100 (Brook) or not playing at all (Sibley).

McCullum = Bielsa

Great when it works but a car crash waiting to happen.

Ali Orr at Sussex.

The future.

Re: England v NZ Test Series
No way will we even compete for the Ashes with this team. Bazball as an idea is great but it's like filling your defence with wingers and centre forwards. You have to build a foundation first. Openers main task should be to see off the new ball first and foremost so the flair players are not coming in to bowlers with their confidence up swinging the ball all over the place. You also don't have a like for like seam attack, none of whom can wield the willow. So we need a few changes. Firstly openers need to have a strong defensive game. So I would open with Hamid or Burns and Stokes. I know that will seem stupid to some, but he knows how to defend and it will get his mindset away from scoring the fastest century no matter what condition the game is in. Then at 3 I'd have Malan, followed by Root, Pope and either Ali or Buttler depending on the pitch and then Folkes. Then the bowlers, one of Broad or Anderson should now rotate with each other, Potts should be left out for a quicker, taller bowler like Overton and then either Wood or a left armer and Leach. We must also get away from the idea than the only way to get tail lenders out is a constant barrage of throat music.

I was meant to be going tomorrow. I’m glad it ended today now.

I heed the point about the batting being the no.1 problem, though.

Re: England v NZ Test Series
I'm not panning the bowlers as such, it's more as a unit, you just can't regularly compete across the word with 3 low 80's bowlers when every other top nation has at least 2 mid 80's early 90's mph. It's been proven over the last few years.

Re: England v NZ Test Series
Indeed, jibbers. We were behind in all 4 tests and required miracle innings from YJB amidst record 4th innings run chases. The reaction to those matches was absolutely absurd.

Harsh on the bowlers though, for me - we certainly don't miss Mark Woods average of 40 in England. They've kept us competitive over the past 5 years or more and 326 wasn't much more than par here.

Not saying we don't need better- its fairly ridiculous how we still rely on broad and Anderson- but the bowlers are a long way down the list of problems.

Re: England v NZ Test Series
Westside, you seem to think those 4 Tests mask over 4 years of us being absolutely shit.

NZ were clearly not at the races, and we had a few Tests where things went our way, albeit with some astonishing batting. I did say during that, I hoped we batted first at some point to see what this is all about.

After a break from those 4 Tests, it's back to the old routine. You simply aren't going to be a top test team with shit openers and 3 80mph bowlers (2 of them as old as the hills in Cricket terms), and your captain running down the pitch no matter what, especially with a Bob average spinner who doesn't contribute with the bat.

They're the main issues, then you have Pope never looking secure regardless of how many runs he's got, Bairstow never being consistent over a long period of time, and Stuart Broad batting at 8. You done out on 4 Tests though, mate.

Re: England v NZ Test Series
Fuck knows. But how did our batsmen score over 300 when generally up against a decent attack who do a bit with the ball we do what we did at Lords?

Westside 6:37 Fri Aug 19
Re: England v NZ Test Series
Also, is BazBall another word for flat track bullies?

If the recent 4 wins were on flat tracks, how did England's trundlers manage to get nearly 80 wickets?

Far Cough 6:36 Fri Aug 19
Re: England v NZ Test Series
Come on, we got smashed by Australia, we didn't even give them a game, that fucking hurts

Has any test team ever had a flakier top 3 than the current England team?

Also, is BazBall another word for flat track bullies?

Re: England v NZ Test Series
Do you honestly think as a test side England have no batting problems at the top of the order?

They have a shed load of problems at the top of the order

NZ may have been missing players, but England are missing Stone, Archer, Wood, so to win 4 tests on the bounce, taking 80 wickets, was some going. Poor game this, but we are not as crap as you would make out

Far Cough 6:11 Fri Aug 19
Re: England v NZ Test Series
So we beat a an NZ side that had a few of their best players missing.

Re: England v NZ Test Series
Methinks the England test team should be relegated to the second tier of cricket nations but I fear the likes of Afghanistan may be too much for them

So, England didn't just win 4 games on the bounce, before this test then?
